↳ backstory

After the conclusion of the Second World War, Erik spent several years trying to find Schmidt and exact vengeance, murdering other Nazis and innocent bystanders along the way. This mission for vengeance eventually leads Erik to cross paths with Charles Xavier, who saves him from drowning in his struggle to sink a submarine on which Schmidt is a passenger. This moment is a turning point for Erik in every sense. It is not only the moment he realizes that he is not alone and that there are other powered individuals in the world—something that Schmidt intentionally kept a secret—but it is also the moment he begins to fall in love with Charles. After the Cuban Missile Crisis/“beach divorce,” Erik is wracked with guilt over injuring Charles and consumed with anger toward the human race. He parts ways with the X-Men and joins the remaining members of the Hellfire Club to form the beginnings of the Brotherhood of Mutants. At some point before he is framed for the assassination of JFK, Erik has a brief affair with Miss Maximoff, Wanda and Pietro’s mother. He was not aware of the twins’ existence until they reached adulthood. He struggles with guilt and awkwardness over this, and wishes that he could have played a more active role in their life.He also fathered Lorna Dane, who he did know about, but he had agreed with her mother that it was better for her sake for him to remain out of her life unless absolutely necessary. Despite this agreement, Erik gifted Lorna a medallion on her thirteenth birthday [re: THE GIFTED], eventually leading her to discover her biological father.Following the events of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, Erik returns to Charles in an attempt to apologize and because he has nowhere else to go. Charles allows him inside, but they exchange very little words that night. In the morning, they briefly discuss what occurred in Paris and Washington DC. Erik insists that he never planned to make an attempt on Raven’s life.He acted on impulse and apologizes profusely for this, but Charles does not want to hear it. He tells Erik that he can’t live like this any longer, and that he cannot take him at his word—he has to prove himself. Erik asks him how, but Charles cannot provide him an answer to that question.

↳ backstory continued.

Erik leaves for Europe and, shortly after, meets his wife, Magda—[X-MEN: APOCALYPSE].In some way, perhaps subconsciously, this is how he decides to prove himself to Charles: by leading a quiet life and remaining out of the public eye. This lasts for a decade until the events of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE when Magda and his daughter, Nina, are killed by Polish police after Erik uses his power to save a man at his workplace.Erik is consumed once more by rage and vengeance and once again pulled back from the ledge by his love for Charles. However, after the events of APOCALYPSE, something has shifted and settled inside him. Despite Charles’ offer for him to stay in Westchester, Erik once again decides to leave, having come to a solemn decision to take his own life.Upon a rooftop in Dusseldorf, Erik had been prepared to do precisely that, when he came across a panel from the first model of Cerebro that he had helped Charles build at the Mansion. He’d kept it in his wallet, even all these years later. This panel is a reminder of love, hope, and one of the first things Charles had ever said to him: you’re not alone. This ultimately leads Erik to continue living and gets him back to seeking out other mutants and the founding of the island of Genosha, as seen in X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX.Erik does propose to Charles in Paris, but Charles denies him, stating that he's not ready for all of this. Charles takes time to himself to travel Europe, and Erik returns to Genosha.About two years later, Charles returns home to Westchester and Erik, having kept a close eye on him, is not far behind. Erik tearfully proposes to Charles with a wedding band that he crafted out of the panel from Cerebro, and Charles accepts. They are currently living together at the mansion and both trying to heal and feel like themselves again.
